The Town Council has approved the installation of a Community Garden at Harmony Park and allocated funds for the Parks Department to assist with site preparation/construction. At the January 27, 2015 Town Council meeting, a group of residents, along with Girl Scout Troop 3909 and Keep Trophy Club Wilds (KTCW) members, presented background and a development/management plan regarding a Community Garden project. The Park Board reviewed the Community Garden project in the fall of 2014 and subsequently recommended the project to the Town Council.
The garden should be operational this spring and will be managed by a Lead Gardener, Keep Trophy Club Wild (KTCW) members and the local Trophy Club Girl Scout Troop 3909. Three Girl Scouts presented research on Community Gardens and provided ideas regarding how to make the garden successful. KTCW will provide general management and resources, legal support and financial support, master gardener/naturalist expertise and coordination/ collaboration. Parks & Recreation staff will contribute initial site work and infrastructure construction. The Girl Scouts will focus on fund raising, gathering volunteers for the project, garden preparation and organization.
The garden construction includes a fenced perimeter with entry gate and raised beds. A loop walkway through the garden allows for access to individual plots and a gathering area in the center provides a space for small classes or meeting area. There will be two quick connects for hand watering which can be boxed and locked for garden use only. The plan includes approximately 15, 4’ x 8’ plots, 7, 4’ x 4’ plots and 5-10, 2’ x 8’ special height plots. A compost area will also be located in the garden.
Information regarding leasing plots will be forthcoming soon!
