Update (June 16, 2016) --- A mosquito sample collected at Trophy Club Drive and Trophy Park Drive tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV). Out of the 100 specimens tested from the site, one tested positive. Larviciding efforts have been stepped up and truck-mounted ground spraying (adulticiding) will take place Friday, June 17 and Saturday, June 18 in the evenings between 9:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. Ground spraying will occur in a 1/2 mile radius of where the positive mosquito sample was collected.

April 12, 2016 – Denton County Public Health (DCHD) today has confirmed the first travel-associated case of Zika virus in a Denton County resident.  The case is a female with international travel to a country with active transmission in late January.

Zika virus is spread to people primarily through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito, a known aggressive daytime biter.  Sexual transmission has been reported in a small number of cases.  The most common symptoms of Zika are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis…

This winter season has been unusually wet and warm, providing attractive breeding conditions for a variety of insects, including mosquitoes.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) plans to start the SH 114 expansion project later this year, which also includes two sections of sound wall to help buffer highway traffic noise. A TxDOT Public Meeting has been scheduled for March 1 to provide project information and solicit public comment. TxDOT plans to add an interior lane in both directions from Kirkwood to Trophy Lake Drive, and an interchange at SH 170 and Parrish Lane. At the February 9th meeting, the Town Council proclaimed February 16, 2016 as ‘Dennis McCreary Day’ in Trophy Club. Mr. McCreary recently retired from the Northwest Independent School District (NISD) as the Assistant Superintendent for Facilities, Planning & Construction. Dennis completed 16 years of service with NISD and 30 years of service in Public Education.

The Texas Department of State Health Services has reported the first case of Zika virus disease contracted in Texas, with the possibility of sexual transmission from an infected person who had recent travel history from areas where Zika is currently being transmitted. Primary transmission of all previous cases in Texas has been related to foreign travel.  At this time, there have been no cases of Zika virus contracted or imported into Denton County.
